Help!!!

Here's your first line of answers when you can't find us. These are some little ways to help you figure out what might be wrong. You can submit a report to the us on the web
Click Here (with Internet Explorer) or here (with Netscape). Of course, if you have further questions please send me an email if your email is working, or call me at
6-4802.

I have kind of created these as people have asked me questions. I should probably put a counter on these pages and order them by the number of hits. Please let me know if you find these a help or a hindrance.

NETWORK PROBLEM??? PRINTER PROBLEM???
EMAIL PROBLEM??? PASSWORD PROBLEM???
Norton AntiVirus Help File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

What do I do??

Is the network down?

My files are missing!!

Make sure you are logged in to OISSOMNT - the login screen should show OISSOMNT as the domain. Some Win2000 machines won't show the domain unless you click on the little "more" button.

          Are the drives mapped?

          I can't see shared on Parker1.

My documents won't print!!

Email is over quota - the most common reason for not getting email.

Email can still be over quota even after I deleted a bunch. Then you need to "purge the deleted" or "empty the trash". Below is how to empty it. To check to see if it's a quota problem, then go to webmail.med.unc.edu, then click on folders. You can see which folders are big, and if you are over the 20MB quota that most of us have. You can empty the trash from there, too.

Netscape: Hit file, empty mail box (this may not be quite right, but it is close). I'll explain if you send me email (gcrc-sys-mgr@med.unc.edu). It is also good to compact mail boxes from time to time (like monthly).
you can also set the properties for your imap server, under edit, preferences, mail servers, server properties to "expunge" inbox on close.

Eudora: Go to you "dominant folder" (for IMAP), open the trash folder, select all or most of the big files, hit the delete button. It is also good to compact mail boxes from time to time (like monthly).

Outlook: Hit Edit, Purge deleted.

If you are still having problems check your email account at webmail.med.unc.edu. This will also verify that you are using the email password. Passwords are the second most common problem with email. Go there and look at the folders to double check that the trash is empty and you are not over quota. If you can see messages on Webmail, but not on your client, then we know to work on your computer. If the mail is not on Webmail, then it's an OIS problem. We'll still help you solve it, but OIS will most likely be the people we need to take the action. You can talk to them at 6-1325.

AARRRGHHHHH , MY PASSWORDDDD!!!! - Second most common problem

There are several passwords to consider - email, network (OISSOMNT) login, and your ONYEN (main campus resources). All of these require you to change your password every 90 days, and you can't reuse the previous 4 passwords. There are also passwords to get into CIS, A2K/SMS, finance and personnel systems. To update OIS email and network login go to https://somid.med.unc.edu/ . SOMID is for your med school email, and domain account is how you get to files on Parker1. To update your ONYEN go to http://onyen.unc.edu.

Password should generally be at least 6 characters long. ONYEN must be 8 characters long. Include some special characters and vary the case to make it harder to guess. Avoid using your name or inversions of your name or user id. Now, that you have a good password, if your password doesn't appear to work:

1. Check that your cap locks is not on.

2. Try to browse the local web so you'll know if the network is working.

3. For network login, double check that your user id is right and that the domain is oissomnt.

4. Try logging in from a different machine to determine if it is a machine problem or a password problem. Contact GCRC computer support personnel, and let them know if you have forgotten your password or that your machine is having trouble connecting to the server. Let them know what you have tried to do to resolve the problem.

5. For email, try using the webmail.med.unc.edu so you'll verify that you have the right password, and that the server is working. If you don't have the right password there, you'll need to take a picture ID to room 67 Macnider, OIS User services. They are normally open all work days, except 1 - 3 on Wed.
