Norton Help
You need to check your virus definitions from time to time. If you are
on the UNC network, in today's environment, your virus definitions should
automatically update every day. Norton Antivirus is available on the campus
site license. It is the software of choice for the GCRC and the only one
specifically discussed here. Many other softwares have either an autoupdate
mechanism or you can go to there web site and download updates and manually
install them. If you have questions about other software, send an email
to gcrc-sys-mgr@med.unc.edu. We'll try to help, if we can.
Check Your Virus Definition Dates
Right click on the yellow Norton shield on the right end of
your task bar, near the clock When you mouse over it, you'll see the name
of the application. Select Open Norton. You'll get the Norton Window.

Look in the bottom center for the Virus Definition File Date. This date
is generally not more than a week old. If it is click on the Live Update
and follow the prompts. It may tell you that there is no update available,
which means the one you have is current.
Schedule Live Updates
To check / set the schedule, pull down the file menu and select Schedule.
Set the schedule for a day of the week and time of day that you are normally
at work. On Win98 machines, it will not update if you are not logged in.
Win2000 machines should update, if they are turned on, even if you are
not logged in.
Scan YOUR Hard Drive
If you have weird activity, and suspect a virus gnome is tromping through
the entrails of your compture, give it a scan. This uses Norton Antivirus,
free to University staff, so that's what we support. If you have other
software it will have similar choices.
Scan YOUR Hard Drive
